### <mark style="background-color:green;">What is a Testnet?</mark>

A testnet is a parallel blockchain used for testing and experimentation. Tokens on a testnet have no real-world value, providing a risk-free environment for developers and users to test applications without the possibility of financial loss.

### <mark style="background-color:green;">Part 1: Bitcoin (BTC) on Testnet v3</mark>

The Bitcoin testnet v3 allows for experimentation with Bitcoin transactions without using real BTC.

**1.1. Setting Up a Wallet**

Several wallets support the Bitcoin testnet, but we recommend using the Electrum wallet.

**1.1.1.** Download Electrum wallet from the [official website](https://electrum.org/#download).

For Windows users, we recommend downloading the Portable version as it's easy to set up without any installation.

<figure><img src="https://3770226349-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fu2Dw921L0PDeSbvkxcPl%2Fuploads%2FxOLQ2VhFOhipMRfdYrMG%2FBTC%202.jpg?alt=media&#x26;token=a6292611-b1cd-454c-bc61-918f23529a29" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**1.1.2.** For Windows users: After completing the download of the portable version, create a new shortcut of the Electrum portable executable file. Go to the Properties of this shortcut and on the Target line after the quotes press space and type: `--testnet`

(*i.e.:* `…electrum-4.5.8-portable.exe" --testnet`) and press <mark style="color:$success;">Apply</mark> button.

<figure><img src="https://3770226349-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fu2Dw921L0PDeSbvkxcPl%2Fuploads%2FhWKVs26IXrVKmBzxukKx%2FBTC%201.jpg?alt=media&#x26;token=959a672d-0dfe-4416-970b-bdb25a749414" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Launch Electrum wallet through this shortcut and <mark style="color:$success;">testnet</mark> version of the Electrum will launch. If you did everything correct then you will see the next popup window.

<figure><img src="https://3770226349-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fu2Dw921L0PDeSbvkxcPl%2Fuploads%2FG4jy7nR4xbUTKMBpiJbV%2FBTC%205.jpg?alt=media&#x26;token=39211a4b-8606-42f3-b77c-d44ad38bd060" alt="" width="482"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

**1.1.3.** For Mac users: After completing the download, move Electrum app to your Applications folder. Then open the Terminal app and run the next command: `/Applications/Electrum.app/Contents/MacOS/run_electrum --testnet`

After successfully running the Electrum wallet application will start in testnet mode.

<mark style="color:$warning;">Note: Don't close Terminal while using Electrum, just minimize it.</mark>
